The Thyroid

There are many different causes of hair loss and sometimes it can occur when something in your body is unbalanced. Sometimes this unbalance is caused by a thyroid condition either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, where the thyroid is too active or underactive, respectively.

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland located at the front of your neck. The function of the thyroid is to create hormones that are released into your bloodstream that are responsible for sending messages to your body to keep your organs working, the hormones regulate your energy level and the reproduction of your cells.

If your thyroid is producing too much or too little hormone you may notice dry or brittle hair, thin hair, or hair loss. If you think your hair loss could be attributed to your thyroid you should ask your doctor. A simple blood test can measure your thyroid hormone.

If you do have a thyroid disease, the good news is that it can be treated by medication used to regulate your thyroid hormone levels. Once your hormones become balanced your hair loss should resolve.
