Damage Proof Your Hair
As we age our hair ages right along with us. We may notice that over time our hair loses volume, shine and bounce. There are steps you can take to slow this aging process and protect your hair from damage.
Get a Trim
Trimming off split ends creates a neater look which gives the appearance of a fuller, sleeker style. A trim every 4-6 weeks can also stop the frayed split ends from traveling further up the hair shaft. Have a lot of split ends? Ask your stylist to add layers; this is an easy way to achieve a trendy style while cutting off months of damage.
Evaluate Your Color
Chemical processing damages hair and even changes its texture. Plus, to maintain the color or style usually means regular upkeep and further processing. If your hair seems to be breaking or shows signs of damage it may be time to reevaluate your look. A natural look is always the most flattering. Rather than a full head of blond hair, perhaps switch to highlights where you can blend in your natural color. Ask your stylist about semi-permanent color which tends to have less harsh chemicals. Try different hair styles like curls and side parts to camouflage visible roots to increase the time between touch ups.
Minimize Heat Styling
While hot hair tools are useful for achieving beautiful styles, the heat is not healthy for your hair. Your hair will look and feel healthier if you lay off the hair dryer, curling iron and flat iron. To achieve a great style without heat, while your hair is wet, move your fingers under your roots, pull your hair up and away from your scalp and clip it on top of your head. Your roots will have volume when it is dry and you let it down. If you have natural waves, add a wave spray and scrunch your curls inside a damp towel for frizz free curls. Try adding a smoothing cream and braiding your hair overnight for natural looking waves. Ask your Images stylist for tips on an up style you can do at home on days that you skip the blow dryer.
Wear Sunscreen
Sunscreen for your hair is especially important if you use hair color. The sun's UV rays cause hair color to fade. Find a hair product that contains sunscreen or wear a hat while you are exposed to sun to protect your hair strands from weakening or fading.
Don't Brush While Wet
Brushing your hair while it is wet is when most breakage occurs. Wet hair is more prone to breakage so while hair is wet, use a wide tooth comb to work out tangles and begin the drying process. Use gentle care while styling wet and damp hair.
Consider a mask
When hair is damaged it needs nutrients and delicate care to prevent further breakage and hair loss. Try a protein mask or deep conditioner to repair and strengthen your hair. Images International offers a variety of products and treatments to address damaged weak hair.
